Ducks on the French Broad River

Wednesday, March 25, 2009 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
It's starting to look like spring here on the French Broad River and there have been more warm day than cold recently.
Spring means there's ducks on the French Broad River! I'm talking about both the smaller flying kind and, more pertinent to Blue Heron Whitewater, the inflatable kind that we can paddle.
Ducks are a really fun way to get out on the river near Asheville, NC and enjoy the arrival of spring. It's also great to get in a raft with a few friend or family members. Getting out on the river is the perfect way to shake off the winter blues.

Winter Whitewater Rafting on the French Broad River

Thursday, January 22, 2009 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
Winter rafting on the French Broad RiverAfter reading the Ice on the River blog, and a The key to comfortable winter rafting is warm clothing.week of night-time single digit temperatures in the Asheville NC area it is hard to imagine whitewater rafting on the French Broad River right now!  Last night, while enjoying the festivities of the Inaugural Ball held in Marshall, NC, I was asked if Blue Heron Whitewater would go whitewater rafting in January, if the weather cooperated.  The answer is YES!  A common phrase regarding mountain life is “If you don’t like the weather, wait a minute”.  Often a severe cold spell can be followed by sunny days in the 70’s.  So!  If you are feeling a case of cabin fever, and just can’t wait until spring to get outside, give us a shout.  We’ll all put on insulating layers, Ciro will put some hot air in the raft, we'll fire up the van, and head to the river!

There is Water in The French Broad River

Monday, December 22, 2008 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
A misty French Broad RiverBeen wondering if it was even possible. But it's true. It's actually been raining here in the Asheville, NC area. And when it rains in Asheville, Hendersonville, and Brevard that's good news for whitewater rafting in Madison County. Not that we are doing a lot of whitewater rafting these days, being almost Christmas and all, but it's great to see the Rowing a raft on the French Broad RiverFrench Broad River actually looking like a river again. And it's been relativly warm too. At least warm enough for some Blue Heron Whitewater staff to take a boat out on the river and enjoy the higher flows. It's actually a great time to get out on the river and do a little white water rafting. No crowds, obviously, and as long as you are dressed warmly the weather is not really a problem. Lots of wild life, that is even more visible with the leaves gone for the winter. We saw that the Surprise Rapid on the French Broad RiverCanada geese were still around, as was a bald eagle. And in the fading light as we approached Hot Springs we saw three deer swimming across the river.

Wink on the river with Blue Heron Whitewater

Whitewater rafting on the French Broad River with Blue Heron WhitewaterRafting on the French Broad River was a great way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon with all of my friends and co-workers from Wink Heads and Threads in Asheville, NC! The conditions were PERFECT and everyone had the best time! Our guides were Sandy and Eleanor, and Ciro took some wonderful photos of all of us. Blue Heron WhitewaPaddling a duck down the French Broad Riverter is a great place for family and group rafting trips in North Carolina. Our group met in Asheville, NC and drove to the Swim and splash time on the French Broad RiverBlue Heron Whitewater meeting place only 15 minutes away! We had thorough gear-up and instruction time, loaded on the bus, and away we went to the French Broad Blue Heron Whitewater has rafts and ducks available for guided trips on the French Broad RiverRiver with our wonderful driver Ciro. Our group split between duckies and rafts, and people switched out while on the river to test out the duckie; a single person inflatable boat. Sandy and Eleanor were great instructors as well as story tellers as we ventured down the river. We had an awesome time on the river while running rapids, getting in splash fights, and jumping off "Jump Rock". All in all, Blue Heron Whitewater provided us with an unforgettable outdoor experience!

Joe and his pizza box hat
It was a hot day in June, and plenty to do to get ready for company.  One goal was for guests, who had discovered rafting near Asheville, on the French Broad River, to be comfortable at our new Blue Heron Whitewater meeting place.  Joe had dropped by the week prior, as friends do, to wish us well in our new venture.  His keen eye for detail scoured over our projects in progress. If you know Joe, you know he was born to do.  He cannot sit still, especially when there is something to create or improve.  Lucky us!  He was back this day, with tools, a long list, and a day of labor to give.  With the help of a number of willing friends, and a river of sweat, rocks were moved, tarp platforms leveled, and the banner signs hung.   Our thanks to Joe!!

A Boatman's Holiday

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
So what do people who work guiding boats down the FreBlue Heron Whitewater staff on the Green Rivernch Broad River for Blue Heron Whitewater do on their day off? Why, we go rafting, kayaking, canoeing, or ducking of course. On Saturday the crew of Blue Heron Whitewater took a day off the French Broad River and headed over to the Green River. Just east of Asheville, NC  the Green is home of the famous class V narrows. Not my cup of tea but fortunately just upstream of the narrows stretch cookie breakof river there is a beautiful and fun stretch that is clear and narrow with a couple of attention getting class III+ rapids. And while the French Broad River is wide, free-flowing and ancient (predating the Smoky Mtns.), the Green is narrow and cool and damn controlled. Both rivers are great for family and group rafting trips. The fantastic variety of rivers available in the Asheville, NC area is one of the gJon running Bayless' Boofreat things about rafting in North Carolina.
Our little adventure on the Green was great fun but we are excited to be back here on the French Broad River because after a summer of drought it has started to rain and the French Broad will be a different river tomorrow. Thank you tropical storm Faye.

In May 2008 Blue Heron Whitewater secured a place to mejackie painting our first rafting buset our rafting guests: 3.5 acres of flat ground just outside Marshall, only 18 miles from Asheville, NC.  The place was a blank slate.  Ciro and Sandy  built the first small building. (Neither of us claim to be carpenters, but the real carpenter, Jackie, was busy welding up a paddle box, building a roof rack and ladder, and painting our bus). Thankfully, Jon Boy and Nathan showed up just in time to screw down the tin roof on the reception kioskroof tin.  Oh, it was so hot.  The second little building went much faster, with all the capable and willing folks that had gathered.  It helped, too, that Israel put in a meter box, so FBEMC could connect the power.

One week, many hands, and strong backs later, the slate was beginning to take shape.  Kim and Andre, newlyweds Matt and Maggie, Jon Boy, Nathan, Matt and Meredith moved mulch, painted, leveled up platforms, built a bazillion benches, and extracted some very big rocks.  Blue Heron Whitewater was ready to start the season, and get our rafts on the French Broad River, thanks to the sweat and effort of an amazing circle of friends.  Thanks, y’all!!   the crew

The Thanks Go Marching On...

There is a couple of graphic artists (or rather, a graphic artist couple) in Asheville, NC who had just launched a big project, a video directory of cool things to do in the Asheville, NC area.  (You will want to check out the directory at www.coolcatguide.com)   We had crossed paths with Diane Doyle and Ron Roman many times over the years, through their work designing whitewater rafting brochures.  Our timing was good.  The big project was up and running, and they thought they could relax.  Then we knocked on their door, “Could you help us fine-tune this rack card?  Oh, and then there is the logo…?”   We say THANKS in a big way, for their creative energy and enthusiastic  support.  blue heron whitewater rafting business cardblue heron business card back

Bald Eagles on the French Broad River near Asheville, NC

Monday, August 18, 2008 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
Bald eagle soaring over the French Broad RiverWhile on a whitewater rafting trip down the French Broad River with Blue Heron Whitewater a couple of bald eagles were spotted. Just in the last 2 or 3 years have I been seeing these magnificent birds on the French Broad River. I've often wondered why there weren't bald eagles around on the French Broad. Ospreys are not uncommon, saw one yesterday circling us, showing off the fish in its talons. But no bald eagles until recently. Hopefully they are back to stay because for me paddling down the river and looking up and seeing a bald eagle will always be a thrill. Eagle over North Carolina's French Broad River

A channelized French Broad River through the windy flatsThe last three miles of the Blue Heron Whitewater full day trip on the French Broad River near Asheville NC includes a section of river called the windy flats and one class IV rapid called Frank Bell's. In dry seasons like 2008 this section of the river doesn't get run very often. The windy flats is a truly beautiful stretch of river and at more typical water levels it can be pretty challenging in a raft ot find the channels with enough water.
In August of 1999, another dry season, we decided to paddle down this section and see if we'd find even enough water to get our ducks through. We were pleasantly Kayak ledge is normally a class III+ rapidsurprised to find that the river channelizes (what water there is consolidates into the deepest channels) really well in this section. Of course the scenic beauty remains whatever the water level and Frank Bell's rapid is fun to run and spectacular to see.
On Saturday august 9 we had a Blue Heron Whitewater staff outing (Sandy, Ciro, Fritz, Jon and Dana) to see this section of river again. It was late in the day, the windy flats were beautiful and the Blue Herons were out. Four of us sitting in a row on top of kayak ledge could dam up most of the flow there. Franks was again fun to run and spectacular to see.

Blue Star Camps Go Rafting on the French Broad River

Friday, August 1, 2008 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
Blue Star Camps Rafting with Blue Heron Whitewater June 19, 2008Blue Star Camps have been rafting on the French Broad River near Asheville, NC since the early 1990s. This year, they sought out Blue Heron Whitewater to take their campers, boys and girls ages 9-11, group river rafting. Their first trip was June 19 with 56 campers that day. Conditions were awesome, great weather and good water levels.

View of Big Pillow Rapid on the French BroadBlue Star Camps have a lot of experience with rafting outfitters and take hundred of campers rafting every year on North Carolina rivers, including the French Broad River near Asheville, NC. We are certainly no strangers to them!  They rafted with us for years when we ran the French Broad Outpost of the Nantahala Outdoor Center. When the camp director, Tom, realized that we had started our own company on the French Broad this season, he sought us out because he trusted our expertise, passion for rafting and kids, excellent service, years of experience (Fritz 18 years guiding, Sandy 30 years guiding, Ciro 26 years on the river. And they are all under 40!!)

Small Is Good

Small is Good!
Here's why we (Fritz, Sandy, and Ciro, founders of Blue Heron Whitewater) believe this:

  1. Entrance to Frank Bell's Rapid French Broad RiverWe (Fritz, Sandy, and Ciro) and our good friends (all highly skilled river guides, with collectively decades of experience) can give you exceptional personal attention and service.
  2. We always remember who you are and value your patronage, whenever you call, email, or arrive for your trip. Whether you bring one person or 200. (You'll hear more of this from one of our customers next week.)
  3. We take the time to understand what YOUR goals are for your family trip, group trip, or friends trip, and will facilitate achievement of your goals.
  4. We focus on you, your trip, and not the "next sale".
  5. We don't have a big "infrastructure" (we shudder at the word!) to support, instead they have a flexible, nimble, eco-preneurial business adventure.
  6. We do what we do because we love it. Period. Isn't that refreshing?

French Broad Rafting! The Making of a New Rafting Company

Monday, July 21, 2008 by Blue Heron Whitewater Staff
White Water Rafting Fun at Sandy Bottom on the French Broad RiverWelcome to Blue Heron Whitewater's new blog! As of the date of this posting (today is July 21, 2008), our new website is "under development", so check back often here for news about us, and for tips on great things to do near Asheville NC.

We asked our marketing friend and former river guide, Julie, to help us get started in this brave new blog world.  We like this approach for several reasons: we are busy starting a new rafting company after all!, we would rather be on the river than online, and, we aren't very comfortable writing about ourselves.  Ok, here goes!

Meet Fritz Johnson, Ciro Pena, and Sandy Melton - the wizards, power, and fun behind North Carolina's newest whitewater rafting company - Blue Heron Whitewater.

Fritz in her "office" on way to the French Broad River Ciro, Sandy, and Fritz each have over 20 years experience in the rafting industry, having led operations for powerhouse big companies like Nantahala Outdoor Center. Besides being best of friends, these three love rivers, people, and adventure.

On a Blue Heron Whitewater rafting trip on the French Broad River, you get over half a century of expertise, experience, quality, river smarts, and people passion, all working to bring you the best outdoor vacation experience in Western North Carolina. The guests who raft with Blue Heron Whitewater meet Ciro, Sandy, and Fritz every day.

Fritz
ran the French Broad Rafting operations for NOC for over 10 years, turning the outpost into one of NOC's most successful rafting centers. Fritz knows the French Broad River better than probably anyone else. She has seen the river at every imaginable water level (it's one of the few free-flowing rafting rivers in the US). Every rock, riffle, and rapid is known to Fritz.

Sandy in her "office" on the French Broad River
Sandy
was senior guide, trip leader, and manager on the Nolichucky and French Broad rivers for over 20 years. Sandy's calm spirit, extraordinary paddling skills, and warmth is loved by guests. She raises goats and spins Angora wool on her North Carolina farm with her husband in the off-season.

Ciro in his "office" taking pictures of Blue Heron Whitewater's opening seasonCiro is a professional photographer, retailer, and forever raft guide who has worked on just about every river in the Southeast for over 20 years.  Geez, these guys have it happening.

Visit our photo album of Blue Heron Whitewater's rafting center under construction. (Do you think they are having too much fun? How many people can you recognize helping them get started?)

You can email Fritz, Ciro, and Sandy at blueheronwhitewater@gmail.com, or call them at 1-888-H2O-RAFT (1-888-426-7238).

Or, reach out to them via this new blog using the comments field at the bottom of this entry.  Rock on dynamic trio!
